Are you a fan of funk? Would you enjoy seeing a 14-piece band in concert? Is it a good thing for you when humor is part of a live music experience? If the answer is "yes" to all three of those questions, and you live near Toronto's Danforth Music Hall, then there is only one place to be on Saturday, October 28, 2017: the Halloween Blowout being hosted by Chunk O' Funk!
To learn more about said Halloween bash, we had the pleasure of doing a Q&A with Chunk O' Funk vocalist MC Laysalot. Read on below and be sure to grab tickets via www.ticketmaster.ca.
As a 14-piece band, how hard is it to schedule things for the band? Is there a shared iCal or Google Calendar? MC Laysalot: A schedule? Well, our manager Archibald has a unique system he's used for decades. It consists of a team of highly-trained carrier pigeons, each one carrying all the dates of the year and all the potential venues. They stay in orbit 24 hours a day and when Archie gives the secret COF signal, the birds jettison their little messages onto whatever hotels we might be sleeping at and ideally we find out where the gig is and how much gas we'll need to get there! I hasten to add we've never missed a show.
At what point in your life did you first become MC Laysalot? Laysalot: At birth, of course.
Your Halloween gigs are promising to be the "biggest funkin' party of the year." Do you ever feel a lot of pressure to be so funky? Laysalot: How can there be pressure to be what you are inside? It's a natural state. There's no pressure involved. Now, that time when Chaka Khan showed up at my hotel room and challenged me to a...ahem... "sing-off"... Now THAT was pressure! And yes, it will be, without a doubt, the funkiest damn Halloween party in this or any other town.
Halloween performances aside, what is coming up for the band? Laysalot: It depends if any of us survive the show, to be frank. It is, after all, Halloween and some spooky stuff has been known to happen. If we survive? I reckon we'll hightailing it back to our cryongenic sleep pods for a bit of a snooze... Not before indulging in a massive helping of Kraft Dinner for "hibernation satisfaction." Wait, is that a tune?
When not busy with the band, how do you like to spend your free time? Laysalot: Well, being free and single has its advantages, if you know what I mean? But when I'm not busy entertaining some special friends, I like to indulge in some vigorous Jai Alai and have even been known to play the odd game of Pong on my state of the art coffee table/8 track quad setup.
Is there something you wish more people knew about MC Laysalotte or the band? Laysalot: Yes, absolutely.
Finally, MC Laysalot, any last words for the kids? Laysalot: Well, kids, it's simple. Be funky. And grab your kadunkadunk and get down to the Danforth Music Hall on Halloween! Forget the DJs, kids -- that ain't happenin'! Why listen to a dude with headphones on when you can shake your body to the real thing? There is no substitute and that's a fact!
