Pumping Metal: The Plague Frontman David Adam Monroe on Diet, Exercise and Lung Capacity

Rochester, New York rockers The Plague dropped their latest single "Will You Ever Know Me" on July 28th, 2017; a first taste from their debut release Hope For The F.U.T.U.R.E. due this fall. The track centres around a touching personal story about frontman David Adam Monroe and relationship with his father. Speaking of strength, Monroe is down with fitness and told us about his routine and how it helps with his musical career.

Why and when did you got into fitness in the first place?
David Adam Monroe: I got into fitness when I was in 6th grade. I would Rollerblade or snowboard in all my free time. As I got older, I had to cram a better work out into a smaller amount of time and that’s when I started going to the gym… for 3 hours a day. lol!

What about exercise, health and fitness makes you take it seriously?
Monroe: I like a consistent and healthy routine. Although, it can be a struggle to maintain. Exercise burns stress as well as calories. It helps me feel calm. It helps me feel consistent. It helps me feel like I care about myself, so I can go care about others!


Describe your weekly routine and/or an average workout for you?
Monroe: When I am where I want to be, I normally do a mix of cardio and weights. Here's what I do:

1. I walk for an hour (clearing emails and phone calls lol)
2. 20 min of HIIT - Running at intervals on a treadmill (12 mph peaks, 3.5 mph rests)
3. 20 min on a bike staying in my target zone at that period in time.
4. I focus on 3 muscle groups a day, doing 3 work outs per group, 3 sets a piece. I choose my goal based on how I feel that day for my 27 sets.
5. Drink a shake and get to work!

Some people go Vegetarian and Vegan while others slam steaks, whole poultry farms, and a kitchen sink in regimented 6-meal sittings. Where does your diet sit?
Monroe: I’ve tried a bunch of diets but I like to give my body whatever it asks for as long as it's healthy. I eat low carb in general but if I need them, I give myself slow burn carbs and feel great. I normally try to time them after a workout to regulate my sugar. I am lucky that my favorite food in the whole world is salad! I literally eat a family’s portion of salad several times a day!



Supplements, yay or nay, and why/why not?
Monroe: I love supplements. I feel like diet is an important area of health and I use vitamins to make sure I’m balanced. I see a doctor who takes a test and prescribes a lifestyle of diet, exercise, sleep to keep me going! My favorite supplement is a very small amount of DHEA. A little sliver of that every morning regulates my cortisol and makes sure I fall asleep well and wake up ready to exercise! I’ve tried less natural things and they don’t feel right to me.

How do you find your healthy lifestyle impacts your music and/or live performance?
Monroe: It’s hard to juggle work and exercise. Lately it has been harder to exercise due to the band’s schedule. I really notice my lug capacity taking a hit. I am working hard to sort my schedule at the moment and prioritize health!
