Hippo Campus completed their Winter 2018 tour on February 17th with a sold-out show at the Palace Theatre in their hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Los Angeles pop band Sure Sure came along as support and completed their first national tour of the U.S. in the process. Playing their 2016 hit single “New Biome” gained cheers from the crowd as well as other songs from their 2018 self-titled album, such as “This Must Be the Place” and “Friends.” They then concluded their set by teaching the crowd some dance moves to perform during the chorus of “Hands Up Head Down.”

Playing to 2,500 people is nothing new for Hippo Campus, but it means a bit more when the crowd consists of fans that have been there from the beginning. Having been to the Palace many times since they opened in 2017, I should not have been surprised that Hippo Campus brought together the most energetic and participative crowd I have ever seen at the venue. Their setlist consisted of older songs mixed with those from their most recent release Landmark, and included the songs “Suicide Saturday,” “Western Kids,” and “Simple Season.” The band concluded with “Buttercup” and followed up with “The Halocline,” a song about home that has also become a nickname for the band.
