Six Feet Under - "Death Rituals"

myspace last.fm link_homepage link_label

Rating: 7.5 / 10

What band has a name similar to a television show? That would be death metal band Six Feet Under. Before their was the show, this band was destroying stages and killing speakers all over the world. Happily, they have kept this up with their latest effort Death Rituals. The metal rampage has since continued and hasn't given any sign of slowing down.

Being listed as one of the top selling death metal bands in history, you would expect a solid record. Death Rituals has once again shown why Six Feet Under are topping other death metal acts. It's crazy that once upon a time Six Feet Under was just a side project, yet is now the main focus for these musicians. Steve Swanson brings in crushing guitar riffs that are slow but powerful. Terry Butler, backs up these guitar riffs with behemoth sounding bass lines. Greg Gall smashes the drums to set the destructive pace for the rest of the band. Last and definitely not least, the dissonant lyricist Chris Barnes overlays his low guttural vocals creating the perfect mixture of death metal. On top of putting vocals on this album, Chris Barnes has also done the production on Death Rituals.

If you are a true Six Feet Under fan, you will know that this band has a history of covering songs. This can be heard on their Graveyard Classics series. On Death Rituals, the band covered "Bastard" by Mötley Crüe. This is another crushing cover from Six Feet Under. They will always be known as one of the greatest cover bands, but more importantly one of the greatest death metal bands in history.

Death Rituals is an album made for every metal fan to check out. Horns up to the band for writing great music but also for being able to do significant covers. This is a true sign of real musicianship. Fans of Cannibal Corpse, Torture Killer, Death and Hate Eternal will dig and kill for this record.  [ END ]
