If you like your rock straight from the garage then let us get you more familiar with Calgary, Alberta rockers Crooked Spies who, today, have teamed with yours truly to debut their new single “Pay It Mind” (which you can order on Apple Music or stream on SoundCloud). The band’s backbone consists of brothers Evanik, Dylan and Steven who keep it heavy with classic elements of rock n’ roll with melodic beats and dark, brooding vocals.
Obviously, such music translates well to a live audience where the Evaniks really come into their element with shows fuelled by raucousness that are also inclusive of their audience. Their most recent release is the album High Plains which the four-piece view as a perfect representation of their live show. Rounding out the band is bassist Aaron Samson and Mark Lawlor, both of whom were also brought up on blues, garage, and punk. Thus far, Crooked Spies have provided support for Danko Jones and Grandson so you know they’re legit. Currently, they’re in the studio recording yet another new album with “Pay It Mind” here to hold you over until the album drops in the coming months.
Okay, let’s check this track out already!
Commenting on “Pay It Mind,” Dylan Evanik, noted: “(The song) is a play on the saying ‘pay it no mind.’ Instead of dismissing things or ‘putting shit behind you,’ it’s about actually recognizing that you or maybe someone you love has an issue or is living out the same mistakes on repeat. By paying attention you are actually present in your own life and you have a chance to change things.”
He continues.... “‘Pay It Mind’ was one of those songs that was written front to back in about 45 minutes. I had written the verse and chorus riffs about a week prior to writing the lyrics when I was in the field for work. The lyrics came my first morning back home, sitting on my patio in a semi-soothing state of self-loathing. The song is based on being stuck in a cycle of living out the same mistakes over and over again. I was definitely in a ‘rut’ at that point with bad habits rearing their ugly head on a far too regular basis. The premise of the song is to actually acknowledge these flaws or missteps and legitimately make a change. It doesn’t matter if it’s big or small. Basically to get out of the repetitive cycle of bullshit you might be dealing with. I was just reflecting on that old saying ‘pay it no mind’ and thinking that it doesn’t always apply.”
