As we’re making our way into the Doncaster Dome, an unusual choice of stop-off’s for one of rock’s biggest icons, the walls are shaking and I mean really shaking. Ah yes, that would be support act Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons rattling through a thunderous rendition of Motorhead classic “Ace of Spades”. Not a bad way to start the evening but, sadly, due to the volume of traffic heading into the venue, hearing the Motorhead man was about the best we could hope for tonight.
So onto the main event and, like I said, an unusual choice of stop on this short UK run for Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators which, as we find upon making our way through the crowds, is nothing more than an old sports hall. By day the venue is a leisure centre but, tonight, the venue is taken over by Yorkshire’s rock fraternity who are here in force. Striding out wearing the familiar top hat and shades, for the next two hours Slash, accompanied by Alter Bridge frontman Myles Kennedy puts on a real stripped-back rock ‘n’ roll show with no airs and graces. Opening with “Call of the Wild”, the set list consists primarily of material from Slash/Myles work and material from Slash’s own solo material with a token rendition of “Night Train” the only reference to the guitarist’s day job.
Check out the recently-released fan-filmed video for "Mind Your Manners":
Padding out a two hour set with a few solos whilst also handing over the reins to bassist Todd Kerns for “We’re All Gonna Die” and “Dr.Alibi”, Slash and Myles were everything you would expect from two of modern rocks superstars. Slash’s wailing guitars duelled with Kennedy’s soaring vocals as the likes of “Serve You Right” and “Driving Rain” became just two highlights of what will surely be one of the biggest shows this corner of Yorkshire will see in a long, long time time.
