ALL The Skinny

Supergroup: “A term used to describe music groups composed of members who had already achieved fame or respect in other groups or as individual artists.” The term supergroup, more specifically rock and roll supergroup, has existed now since about the late 1960s. The term started to become frequently used when David Crobsy...

With their rookie year on the Trustkill line up, Atlanta's gritty post-hardcore boys come full strength with their debut album to rock the underground scenes. Offering nothing but hard-hitting rock fused with spacey post-hardcore riffs, City Sleeps is already marking their territory with an album that hasn't even dropped yet. Hardcore dedication and the talent to write an album with no label backing, shows that true rock n' roll is still alive!

If we’re going to talk about the roots of today’s hard rock/punk rock/metal music, it’s imperative to go back and look at three bands specifically; the forefathers of punk and alternative rock The Sex Pistols, The Ramones and The Clash. These three bands were all prevalent from the mid 1970s to the early 1980s and what was most groundbreaking about them was not just their music, but their attitude and their message. The Sex Pistols were a no holds barred, down and dirty group of hard drinking, hard living Englishmen that really encompassed the “just don’t give a fuck” attitude that has become so famous in punk rock music.

The greater Toronto area of the province of Ontario in Canada has had some great success delivering prominent alternative rock bands over the last decade. First there was Finger Eleven (formerly The Rainbow Butt Monkeys) from Burlington, Ontario who have gone onto big success scoring top forty hits even in the United States.

Remember the good old days of '90s alternative rock? Well of course you do, unless you're way too young or you grew up under a rock (no pun intended), who could forget the 1990s, the decade of flannel shirts and teen spirit. Not since the 1970s has a decade produced such a quantity and such a quality of hard rock and alternative music.

It is impossible to find a band nowadays who isn't trying to put across a certain message. Whether it is love, friendship, heartbreak or basically any human emotion, you can find bands writing about it. But very few bands come along and deliver a message of self-reliance and empowerment, and deliver it with a hard hitting and passionate album to back it up.

An actuality of today’s rock, metal and music scene in general is how generic the mainstream has become. Day after day, we are flooded with bands that sound almost exactly the same as one another, so much so you might think some record company people found a method of cloning the same four members of a rock group over and over again.

It’s not often that bands come around who can push the both their own musical limits and a genre’s sonic capabilities quite like Hopesfall. All with the same goal in mind, the band has brought influences and concepts from all regions into the music they lay out. Appealing to fans of heavy music with heavier guitars on their new album Magnetic North, they have also continued to keep their melodic tones with trippy guitars and soaring lyrics. Continuing to push the limits of the music scene, Hopesfall is gaining a larger fan base each day giving them the potential to be the next heavyweights of the hardcore and emo worlds.

One sub-genre of heavy rock and metal music that has recently enjoyed a resurgence of sorts is death metal. Death metal is maybe the most ferocious and extreme type of metal music, combining brutally hard and loud guitars with gut wrenching vocal styles. This genre has been going strong now since the 1980s, largely thanks to strong...

So what happens when a friend tells you about a band and the show stopping performance they laid out earlier in the week and your boss emails you asking you to write an article on them!? Last week Straight Goods was a band in my music knowledge as someone I had "heard of." Being away from many local shows for a while, it has taken me away from hearing bands with as much raw energy as these guys. Combining edgy punk with brutal hardcore it leaves room for nothing but a massacre on stage.

Is there something in the air in the U.S. State of Massachusetts? Or maybe it’s the water? Perhaps a contagious virus? I pose these questions only because of the remarkable fact that so many of the biggest and baddest metal, hardcore, and metalcore bands of the 1990s and the present originate from the Bay State. The examples really are endless, there’s Killswitch Engage, Unearth, All That Remains, Since The Flood and of course Shadows Fall.

Both a pick up line and a group of "dudes" you probably drank with last weekend, Hello Beautiful is coming out of the Caledon, Ontario scene to give you and everyone you know the clap. (Taken from their song “Do You Have the Clap” or “Does the Clap Have You”) Watching this band form, it never occurred to me that it would ever become something as big as it recently has.

Rock and roll music has seen many trends, fads and movements come and go over the last two decades, some more influential and popular than others. Depending on whom you ask one of the most popular movements in rock outside of the grunge revolution in the early and mid-1990s was the nu-metal, rap/rock explosion of the late 1990s.

Silverstein is a five-piece powerhouse that emerged from the hardcore/emo rock scene in 2000. Since forming in Burlington, Ontario they’ve experienced an overwhelming rise to rock stardom. They rose from the hardcore scene in their hometown and after they got together they were eager to record. With Neil Boshart and Josh Bradford on guitars, Bill Hamilton playing bass, Paul Koehler mastering drums and Shane Told behind the mic, they became Silverstein.

For quite some time now, one of the most consistent and awesome metal band producing scenes in the United States has been the state of Massachusetts. While the state’s heritage in rock and roll goes back to the blues (and then Aerosmith in the mid-1970s), a booming metal and hardcore scene has developed over the period of the late 1990s and carried over into the present time.

What’s in a band name? Although it’s open to interpretation about how likable a band name is let’s be honest, there are some great ones and some downright silly ones. Even though they might not yet be known to huge amounts of hard and alternative rock fans, the band carrying the name Fake Reality would certainly fall under the great band name category.

For reasons unbeknownst to me, when I hear or see the name Soilwork, it always seems to emit elaborate mental visions. For instance, the name produces images of gargantuan, extravagant and rusted machines, erratically cluttered with various cogs and levers, surrounded by a slew of skeletons, chains and other oddities.

The four above adjectives could be used to describe just about any punk rock band from the Sex Pistols to Green Day to Rancid, but these words actually come from the official website of the band known as the Saigon Hookers. Boasting perhaps one of the most comical band names around, the Hookers are a down and dirty three piece indie rock band originating from the town of Kitchener, Ontario intent on rekindling a classic conception of punk rock. Not only is the band’s music fast and furious, but so is their work ethic.

One of the most perplexing questions that critics, fans and record executives have all pondered for decades is who’s going to make it big in the mainstream? It’s really an impossibility to predict as year after year bands seemingly come out of no where and take the rock and metal world by storm with a multi-platinum selling record and a bunch of hit singles.

The Marble Index. Sound familiar? The name, which originated from a solo record by former Velvet Underground chanteuse, Nico, has now resurrected in the form of a durable trio with something to prove - they are here to stay! The Marble Index is a three-piece sensation from the unlikely Steel Town - Hamilton Ontario.
