Witherfall’s new EP, Vintage, is a glorious little bonus offering consisting of two cover songs plus some acoustic tracks, an interesting and welcome change from the dark melodic metal act. Released on March 22nd via Century Media Records, the eight-track EP (which you can purchase and/or stream here) showcases the band’s musical talents and ability to perform well outside their perceived “comfort zone.”

From covers of the late Tom Petty’s classic hit “I Won’t Back Down” to their own “Ode to Despair,” Vintage acts as a companion release to A Prelude to Sorrow, which was first sold on the group’s recent tour that kicked off on March 13th. Witherfall will be hitting Europe this May to further support the EP, along with Sonata Arctica and Candlemass. Part of what makes Vintage “vintage,” is its incredibly artistic album cover.... So, for the latest edition of our continued Top 10 series, the Los Angeles, CA-based metallers outline for us the “Ten Best Album Covers According to Witherfall.”

10. Little Richard - Here’s Little Richard (1957)
- Little Richard is the originator and architect of rock ‘n’ roll. The first to break ALL of the rules. Illustrated by Ahmad DuBose-Dawson.

09. Type O Negative - Bloody Kisses (1993)
- Like Howard Stern says “You can’t go wrong with hot lesbians.” Illustrated by Joseph Michael.

08. Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991)
- The album cover (illustrated by Anthony Crawford) at the time reminded me of cartoons I used to watch on TV when I was a kid. Also that album kicked ass.

07. Cinderella - Night Songs (1986)
- Don’t Judge me…

06. Savatage - Dead Winter Dead (1995)
- Just a perfect portrait by Joseph Michael that encapsulates the story and sonic atmosphere so well.

05. King Diamond - Them (1988)
- Just a perfect portrait that encapsulates the story and sonic atmosphere so well. Again.

04. Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy (1973)
- Though I think the story goes that this was a last-minute change. The cover just has so much vibe, we just always really loved this cover.

03. Dissection - Storm of the Light’s Bane (1995)
- Another Kristian Wåhlin masterpiece. I love the purple hue and it fits the music so perfectly.

02. KISS - Destroyer (1976)
- I found this cover in my dad’s record collection when I was four years old and thought Gene Simmons was the coolest looking thing I had ever seen.

01. King Diamond - Voodoo (1998)
- Kristian Wåhlin is absolutely amazing and this artwork has so many little details. It captures the swampy New Orleans feel so well. It reminds us of the Ann Rice novels from the “Taltos Series.”

We’re sure more will be announced soon but, until then, mark down in your calendars that Witherfall will be performing at the Keep it True Festival in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany which takes place from April 26th to 27th.

Let’s have a “Moment of Silence” for Witherfall with this official music video from A Prelude To Sorrow.
