When it comes to doom metal, I am not sure that there is anyone better than vocalist Eric Wagner and bassist Ron Holzner, both original members of the Chicago-based act Trouble. Wagner’s immediately recognizable voice is incredibly powerful, beautifully melancholic and really sets the mood and overall vibe for pretty much any record to which he lends his pipes.

The Endless Road Turns Dark, The Skull’s sophomore record, opens with a massive Sabbath-inspired riff that kicks you in the teeth and forces you to take immediate notice. Once the band has your attention, the pounding continues for the next forty-five minutes or so with slow, melodic riffs slicing brilliantly through the mix and, as you might expect, a massive low end so powerful it rattles your bones. This record flows quite seamlessly, but the track that stands out most is “Breathing Underwater”, a tune that starts out with a dissonant intro before crushing the listener with its heavy, doom-laden attack.

The backbone - and my personal highlight of the record - is Wagner’s voice; there really is no one else like him. Layered over the top of those killer riffs, it adds another dimension to the music that other bands in the genre can only dream about. The Endless Road Turns Dark does not disappoint; it is a top-notch record that you are not going to want to miss. It’s a record guaranteed* to please doom metal fans of all ages.

*no actual guarantees.
