Local Athens, Georgia drumming legend Jeremy Wheatley finally threw his sticks aside long enough to create his own solo project, Sailors & Ships, for which we’re thrilled tom share the new music video for the single “Cave In.” The song comes from Wheatley’s new and just-released self-titled Sailors & Ships debut album (Laser Brains) which you can listen to just below, or find on Spotify.
“Cave In” is a touching, gentle song and the video, according to Wheatley, acts as a tribute to his late brother: “This was directed/filmed/acted by my best friend from high school, Eric White. He is a Carrolton, Georgia-based visual artist. I asked him to do a video with no direction from me. Just sent him the song, and said do what you will. Four days later, he was done. He did it as a tribute to my brother who passed away three years ago. He loved Don, he thought he was hilarious, which he was.”

Now fifteen years into a highly successful musical career, Wheatley decided to branch out on his own and try his hand at writing, recording, guitar playing and singing all within his own direction. He has become well known for his work with other bands and songwriters such as Eric Bachmann, Crooked Fingers, Cracker, and Palace Doctor, among many others along the way. Although he was perfectly content behind the drum kit, Wheatley also felt the urge at times to write and record his own songs that primarily focused on sparse arrangements and melodies.
Through practice and experience, he found that he did not feel out of his element branching out, which helped provide some motivation to pursue what you hear today with Sailors & Ships. As Wheatley also explains, “As I became more comfortable writing, as well as, recording/engineering, I just couldn’t stop... and there’s the reason.”
Judging by the results, we can only hope that Jeremy Wheatley continues to feel the itch to keep his guitar close by and carry on with writing and recording.
